Microsoft Launches Fluent Design System

Microsoft held its developer conference in Seattle this week, Build. It announced its design system for building user interfaces across devices known as Fluent Design. This is comparable to Google’s Material Design language. The purpose is to give developers access to a single design language that will work across multiple devices. It was created to allow a design language that looks light, features layers and depth and animations, as well as materials. It will also bring back some translucency that was lost in previous versions of the operating system.

Kevin Gallo, Microsoft’s VP for the Windows Developer Platform states that what makes Fluent different from other similar projects is that it is meant to work well with 2D and 3D environments. It will offer different types of input such as Metro, the design language Microsoft developed for Windows 8 and focuses on touch.
