SEC shuts down Winklevoss Twins

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently rejected a bid to list a bitcoin-tied exchange-traded fund (ETF). The SEC states that there was a risk of fraud, manipulative acts and lack of regulation in the bitcoin market. Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss submitted the proposal for a bitcoin investment that would be accessible to Americans via their IRAs and 401(k)s.

When news broke of the rejection, the price fell 18%. The Winklevoss’ have been pushing since 2013 to be the first creators of an ETF out of bitcoin. You may have heard of their name from claiming that Mark Zuckerberg stole the idea of Facebook when they attended Harvard together. There are now one of the largest owners of bitcoin, run the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange, and run Winklevoss Capital to invest in startups.

Google Shrunk My JPEGs

Google has been working on reducing load times for sites. One approach has been reducing the file size of images, starting back in 2014, reducing file size by 10%. Google recently developed Guetzli, an open-source algorithm that encodes photos, specifically JPEGs, 35% smaller than what is currently available. This is similar to Google’s Zopfli algorithm, which produces smaller PNG and gzip files. Guetzli specifically targets a certain stage of compression that doesn’t sacrifice image quality.
