Updates on Google Hangouts

Google is transforming Google Hangouts to serve businesses better. In an effort to compare to Slack, Google is launching “Hangouts Chat”.

Among Google’s other communication platforms such as the Android SMS app, Google Talk, Voice, Buzz, G+ Messenger, Spaces and Allo, Hangouts Chat will have similar functions and features like Slack. It will be fully integrated into GSuite, where you can share a file from Google Drive and it will grant permission to the person(s) you sent it to. Hangouts will also support bots, one of which can incorporate a group’s calendar to pick a suitable meeting time.

In terms of the video feature of Hangouts, it will now be “Hangouts Meet”, but have the same features as the original. Chat and Meet will only be available for GSuite customers. Learn more about these apps from Google.

Facebook vs. YouTube

Remember how Facebook is trying to transition into a video platform? In a study by social media analytics company Quintly, 6.2 million Facebook posts were analyzed in 2016. The study states that native videos on Facebook net a 1,055% higher share rate than YouTube. In 2015, it was discovered that YouTube was still 11 times bigger than Facebook, with a total of 8,061 years of video watching on YouTube and 713 years on Facebook.

Why is this happening? A large part can be attributed to how Facebook formats videos on the platform. Videos are automatically played in users’ News Feeds and Facebook downplays other video platforms. According to the study, there is a higher reach on Facebook for videos than other platforms.

Of the Facebook profiles that were analyzed, 90% used Facebook native videos, which is three times more than the use of YouTube videos. Another proof point of Facebook’s video transformation.
