This year’s Black Friday sales data is in, reaching a record-breaking $7.4 billion this year, which fell just short of the $7.5 billion predicted by Adobe Analytics. Average order value increased $5.9% YoY with top selling categories including toys, games and electronics such as Airpods, Samsung TVs and Apple laptops. According to TechCrunch, Black Friday sales made on smartphones totaled $2.9 billion, suggesting sales made via mobile may outperform web-based purchases made through computers in the future.

The week of Thanksgiving is usually light in terms of news, yet on Monday Twitter announced a cull of inactive accounts (logged out for 6 months or more) in order to comply with GDPR rules, which saw widespread backlash given this also meant the removal of accounts belonging to deceased individuals. According to BBC’s David Lee, Twitter is urging inactive users to sign-in and agree to the latest privacy policy to preserve their accounts. Following the fallout, Twitter confirmed a memorialization process is set in place and that “account deactivations would occur in the EU first.”

Google has confirmed that a search ranking algorithm update was made last week after speculation of a change arose over the weekend. Unlike core Search Algorithm updates, this change was not pre-announced by Google as are the many, less-noticeable updates made on a weekly basis. Those affected by the update reported a +/-30-50% shift in rankings and traffic. Tracking tools such as SEMRush and Mozcast did not detect significant ranking shifts, so content creators are advised to monitor their analytics and GWT.

Google‘s Site Kit WordPress plugin has officially come out of beta after six months and is now available for widespread use. Users of the Site Kit 1.0 plugin are able to access data aggregated from Google products like Google Search Console, Google Analytics, AdSense and PageSpeed Insights, straight from their site’s dashboard. Google notes the tool is especially useful for people working on sites for clients, as other teams can easily view the site’s data via the WordPress dashboard. Statistics provided by the tool can help users discover trends and identify opportunities for high engagement.
