Conclusion
These conferences represent what we consider the best opportunities for the digital community to learn and grow together under the watchful guidance of some of the most insightful organizers in the business.
However, it’s important to remember that regardless of the quality of a conference’s content, no matter how well organized it is, you get out of it what you put into it. The money and effort invested in attending a conference will have a return on investment when attendees do their utmost to engage with the material and other delegates.
Here are some tips to ensure that you leave an event having scraped every last bit of value you can from it.
Be Visible
Where possible, consider attending a conference not only as a delegate—someone who is there to consume information—but as a speaker, sponsor, panelist or workshop facilitator if the opportunity is there.
Several of the events above have not yet finalized their schedules and are actively looking for contributors. If you feel you have something valuable to share, use the opportunity to gain some serious exposure.
Solidify Existing Relationships
The interactive nature of conferences makes them the ideal place to foster new connections. This, in turn, means they are useful for building on existing friendships and partnerships, year after year.
Find out if anyone in your professional network will be attending a given event and use the opportunity to explore new, rewarding aspects of an existing relationship.
Get Up to Speed
Many conferences will go the extra mile to make first-time delegates feel at home, either through pamphlets, preparatory information on their website, orientation activities, or presentations. This is especially handy for longer events that offer a very wide variety of sessions, workshops, and workstreams.
Don’t be afraid to make use of any orientation sessions that an event may offer. Remember to speak to the organizers to find out if any additional registration is required to attend such an introduction.
Choose Appropriate Sessions
Don’t be paralyzed by the number of options that several of these events may offer. Rather, research the agenda beforehand and plan your time so that you don’t end up shortchanging yourself or spreading yourself too thin. Be decisive and realistic in choosing workstreams, keynote addresses and panel discussions that you want to attend, choosing those that you are absolutely certain will enable you to add real value to your business.
The FE International team attends dozens of conferences each year and for good reason. Some of our most influential partnerships have been borne of introductions at events, followed by relationship nurturing. While tasks are often completed digitally, word of mouth and personal interaction are still the most powerful ways to form meaningful connections.
